Biological Control

Biocides are used throughout industrial and oil & gas operations. Reducing the risk of the bacteria Legionella pneumophila, the bacteria associated with potentially fatal Legionnaires Disease, is a key component of a comprehensive biological control program for cooling towers.

Recently, the Cooling Technology Institute (CTI) issued new guidelines for control of Legionella. CTI's best practice specifies the continuous use of halogen as the primary biocide. If system design precludes an oxidizing biocide (e.g. stainless steel heat exchangers, etc.), there are good alternate choices. (Your Plymouth Technology, Inc. Representative will be happy to review your system needs and make appropriate biocide program recommendations.) That is one reason why the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) recommends that the services of a qualified water treatment specialist be used to define and oversee treatment.
